How a SalesWoman is Born

How a SalesWoman is Born

The name of the game today in PR and marketing is Social Media. I love that the next generation of saleswomen (aka Girl Scout Cookie Sales Reps) are jumping in to what is current. But, there is a little part of me that is sad as well, and here's why...

When I was in 1st Grade, I too was a Girl Scout, and I was told to sell cookies. There was a prize for the "cookie sales leader" in each troop...don't ask me what it was, all I remember was I WANTED IT!

So off I went, everyday after school, walking up and down the streets of Cumberland Forest and Wilshire District of Whitefish Bay. Literally. Everyday.

I returned to homes that didn't answer days before, I would up-sell with the latest type of cookie or offer they buy extra boxes for friends. I didn't realize what I was doing at the time would shape my future so much, but it did.

At the end of the sale, we all had to hand in our sheets. I was up against some fierce competition. A lot of the girl's dad's would take it in to work and sell cookies for their daughters.

I despised that...but there was nothing I could do about it. My competition could get whatever help they could.

...and in the end, well...it's really not a competition...right????

(Side Note: Yes it is, and I won!)

But the moral of the story is this. It's about the ingenuity of these mini-sales experts. I LOVE that they are taking to social media and using it as a platform to grow their sales; but I sure hope they are still learning the old fashioned way as well...by pounding the pavement and knocking on doors while learning how to deal with rejection and persistence.
